The tab, by name.
HowMuchWeOwe is an independent site with one job: connect the national debt to the votes that created it. The debt clock is Treasury's own figure. The price of each bill is the Congressional Budget Office's own estimate. The votes are the House and Senate's own roll calls. We add nothing but the join.
Today that covers 538 current members of Congress and 20 enacted bills since 2017, scored with one yardstick for both parties: a yes on a bill that adds to deficits adds to your member's tab, a no subtracts, and tax cuts count exactly like spending.
Who runs it
HowMuchWeOwe is a personal project, built and paid for by one person, with no funding from parties, campaigns, PACs or advocacy groups. It endorses no one. If it ever takes outside money, that will be disclosed on this page first.
For journalists, creators and educators
- Cite anything. Every figure links to its Treasury, CBO or JCT source. Attribution as "HowMuchWeOwe, howmuchweowe.com" is appreciated but not required.
- Use the cards. Every member, bill and milestone page has a share image at a stable URL. See share cards and embed.
- Embed the clock. A free iframe that updates daily and credits the site.
- Pull the data. /api/treasury returns the live fiscal figures as JSON. Member and bill data exports are available on request.
